This course primarily helps drivers reinstate their suspended licenses. However, it is also beneficial if a driver has accumulated too many points on their license records or wants two-point credit.
A remedial driving course can taken for one of the following reasons:
- Suspension for OVI/OVUAC: If a driver is the age of 21 and caught under the influence of alcohol while driving the vehicle and gets their license suspended, this course will be one of the requirements to fulfill.
- 2-Point Credit: Ohio drivers can accumulate 12 points on their driving license before it is suspended. If a driver receives 2 or 11 points on their license, this course may help add two points. Received two points helps the driver to accumulate 14 (12 + 2) points before their driving license gets suspended. The two-point credit course is valid for three years and a driver can take the course to receive two points five times in their lifetime.
- Court ordered: If an Ohio court orders a driver to take a Remedial driving course, they need to pass the course and send the certificate to fulfill court requirements. In this scenario, the driver won’t receive a two-point credit on the license.
- Juvenile Suspension: The driver is 19 years old or older and is completing the course due to a juvenile suspension that took place before they turned 18.
